Welcome to another series on The Daily Coffee Pro Podcast by Map It Forward podcast for the week commencing Sept 23rd, 2024!
European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is fast approaching and many people have opinions about what it will do to the coffee supply chain, coffee producers, and the price of coffee in general in Europe.
The main issue I’m hearing is that coffee producers “don’t need another expense to add to the list of things to get coffee to the consumer”.
4 months out from the regulation coming into effect, I am keen to understand how different stakeholders are positioned now that EUDR is about to become a reality for them and their partners.
The first of these conversations is with Sustainability and Impact Advisor, Pedro Manga from Caravela Coffee. Pedro did an EXCELLENT job in this series getting into the layers of EUDR, its intended and the unintended consequences.
As a hopeful realist, I walked away from this series seeing EUDR in a new light. It has the potential to do amazing things that most people want to see happen in coffee. If EUDR is successful, coffee producers and traders participating in the supply chain with integrity WILL be better off.
However, if the price of coffee in Europe does not increase as a result of EUDR, then it will have failed.
I highly recommend this series to everyone in the coffee value chain, from coffee producers all the way to consumers. IF EUDR is successful, and I hope it is, we are likely to see similar legislations in many other regions of the world.
